Project Context
Batangas Container Terminal is operated by Asian Terminals Inc. (ATI), with DP World as its foreign equity partner. It serves the industrial Calabarzon region south of Manila and offers an alternative gateway to the congested Manila ports. A PHP 2.5 billion expansion completed in 2019 added a second berth and raised capacity to around 500,000 TEUs a year, with quay cranes, rubber-tyred gantry cranes, reach stackers and internal transfer vehicles working the yard.
The terminal also faces intense tropical downpours and typhoon-season storms that can deliver large volumes of water in a short time. On a flat container yard, that water must be collected and removed quickly to avoid ponding across operational areas.
At the same time, the drainage has to survive constant movement of heavy port equipment. Conventional channel systems can crack, loosen or require heavy reinforcement under these loads, so the terminal needed a drainage solution that combined high capacity with proven heavy-duty performance.
The Solution
A hybrid slot drainage system combining a high-capacity HDPE conduit with a ductile iron top rated to 900kN.
Channel diameters from 150mm to 600mm carry large flows through a smooth-bore HDPE conduit. Transition pieces allow runs to step up in size along their length where flows build.
The ductile iron top and steel walls are designed for areas of extreme loading, such as ports where vehicles with solid wheels turn constantly. The system also needs less reinforcement than many alternatives at this load class.
Each 2m section has an interlocking steel collar, an integrated throat spacer and stabilising feet. Runs connect quickly, stay straight and hold their position during the concrete pour.
Rust-resistant materials suit the coastal environment, and the channels are designed to achieve self-cleansing flow velocity. Access boxes allow the network to be jetted when needed.
Together, these features give the terminal a drainage line that can handle tropical storm flows while standing up to the daily demands of heavy port equipment.
Project Outcome
The terminal's paved areas are designed to clear storm water quickly, helping container handling continue through heavy rainfall with less surface ponding.
With Swarm Aqua® sized and specified through DND's coordination with EJ, the terminal receives a drainage system matched to both its rainfall and its loading, approved and ready to install, first time.
