Project Context
The Port of Ndayane is a new deep-water port being built by DP World about 50km from the existing Port of Dakar. At more than US$1 billion over two phases, it is DP World's largest port investment in Africa and the largest single private investment in Senegal's history. Phase one includes a container terminal with 840m of quay and a 5km marine channel able to handle two 336m vessels at once, adding 1.2 million TEUs of annual capacity.
A container terminal of this scale carries some of the most punishing loads in civil infrastructure. Straddle carriers, reach stackers and terminal tractors move constantly across the apron, often turning on the spot with solid or heavily loaded wheels.
The apron also has to shed large volumes of rainwater quickly across wide, flat paved areas. The drainage and access points therefore needed to be strong enough to carry F900 loads, sized correctly for the catchment, and accessible for maintenance without disrupting terminal operations.
The Solution
A linear slot drainage system and matching access points engineered for very high wheel loads.
Swarm Aqua® F900 channels are designed for loads up to 900kN, where vehicles with solid wheels make constant turning movements. EJ's F900 access covers and gully gratings are rated to the same class across the apron.
The slim ductile iron slot top intercepts surface water along the full length of each run. Its twin offset slots reduce debris bridging, keeping the openings clear in a busy operational yard.
EJ's AquaCALC® design method sizes each channel run against rainfall intensity, catchment area and surface finish, with a 10% safety margin. The result is a single-size or stepped-fall layout matched to the apron's demands.
Combined access/outlet boxes and access covers provide safe points to inspect, clean and jet the network. Maintenance can be carried out without breaking out the apron surface.
Together, these products give the terminal a drainage system that matches the loading of the apron itself: rainfall is collected and carried away efficiently, while every grating and cover is built for continuous heavy traffic.
Project Outcome
The terminal apron is designed to clear surface water quickly during heavy rainfall, reducing ponding that can slow container handling and damage paving.
With F900-rated slot drainage, covers and gullies supplied as one coordinated package, DND ensures the drainage infrastructure is specified to the same standard as the terminal it serves, approved and ready to install, first time.
